After months of hard work we are happy to present you the first release of our thinkery iOS App. Download it now, it’s free!

Features:

quickly add and edit notes, links, todos on the go
archive and delete things
share things by e-mail
access and filter your things by hashtag (all / favorite)
filter by hashtag (while browsing a hashtag things you add get automatically tagged with it)
search and find all your things
more features in future releases!

We are very eager to hear your feedback and get ratings in the app store.

PS: Please note that if you encounter a notification (“Error 400”) at login, your password is incorrect. It is just a minor wording issue but we have already pushed a new release (1.0.1 coming up) with a clearer error text.

Share Public Things On Twitter And Facebook

A much requested feature is now live: the ability to share public things on twitter and facebook.

How it works

As soon as you set a thing to “public” the share section appears. Simply click on twitter or facebook in order to share it with your network.

This works in the overview and single page, for registered and anonymous users.

Browser Extensions Now Feature Autocompletion

Just a quick heads up while we’re waiting for Apple to approve our app… :)

Our chrome/firefox extension and bookmarklet now feature tag autocompletion. So as soon as you type you get a list of your available tags and it works just like you are used to from our web app.

How do you get the updated extension? You don’t need to do anything, the new extension feature automagically comes to your browser.

Public API: Everything You Need To Know In Order To Use It

You might have seen it on our frontpage already, a link to our public API that enables you to make use of thinkery’s technology on other platforms, for example native apps on your Mac or alternative clients on mobile phones, or a simple tool that will add a new thing to thinkery.

Three things you need to know:

Our API is based on OAuth2.
You need to register your app before the API can be used.
We return JSON data.

Accessing thinkery through SSL now the default PLUS Chrome Extension Update

We have completed an invisible but important feature: thinkery.me now uses SSL/TLS by default for encrypting the data transfer between your device and us, therefor making access to your things more secure.

Using SSL/TLS is especially helpful when accessing thinkery through a public wifi network in a coffee shop, conference venue or other location.

At the same time we have also updated our Google Chrome Extension (Version 1.2). Next to now using SSL it also sends the associated page url when adding a text selection, and, has improved user session and cookie handling.

After tuning the last bits we’re happy to announce the release of our thinkery Android App. It is now available in Google’s Play Store!

The app is free to use for locally storing your thoughts and things. The syncing feature is available as an in-app purchase ($2.59 or €1.99).

The most important features at a glance:

Quickly add, edit, delete things on the go
Super-fast search results as you type
Have all your things available offline
Full-screen read mode: double-tap on the thing contents
Sync in the background via push. You add something on thinkery.me and it gets transmitted to your phone automatically in no time

Supported Android Versions: 2.2 and above

Now With Auto-Save & Refined Tag Settings

Did you ever jot down thoughts then switch to another thing only to find out your notes had been lost? No more!

Today we’re introducing our new Auto-Save feature so you can stop worrying. While in Edit-Mode your notes get saved automatically every 60 seconds, and, we also save the currently opened thing when you switch to another one.

A lot of people have requested this feature so we’re really happy it is finally available to you.

Another refinement is around tags. Before you had two different places to define your tag settings, i.e. marking a tag as favorite, setting it as todo or giving it a special color.

First we have combined those tag settings and second made them more easily accessible right from your sidebar. While hovering over a tag a little settings icon appears which opens an overlay on click. There you can set the following:

Set a tag as “Favorite tag”, meaning those tags will be above all others in the tag list
Mark a tag as “Todo tag”, creating an automatic checkbox next to them
Give a tag a special color, for ex. red: #ff0000. We’ll be soon introducing a simpler color picker, for now you have to use Hex-Colors.

Faster Loading Times & Better Performance

You probably won’t see any change but hopefully still notice it. We have optimized bits of the underlying code so you should experience faster loading times and generally have more performance when using thinkery.

Before the app was requesting 37 assets and you had to wait for around 3 seconds.
After our optimisations there are only 6 requests and load time is down to 1 second.

New Text Editor

We have integrated an improved and more modern text editor in thinkery. It enables you to use

keyboard shortcuts, for example for making text bold using Ctrl/Cmd-b
a nice full screen mode where you have more space for editing your things
it works properly in mobile browsers (iPhone, iPad, Android)
tables, horizontal rulers, images, links, etc.

We hope you enjoy the new editor! As always we are very interested in your feedback, tell us if it works better or worse for you, or if you just like it :)

Hi...I'm really interested in using Thinkery. It sounds so efficient and easy. But I just have one question. You see, I'd love to upload all my favorites to a site like your's and then be able to delete from my computer without losing anything. Will I be able to do that?

Improved Settings For A More Personalized Experience

Following user feedback and feature requests (Got some? Use our form here) we constantly enhance our Settings page: the place to go to customize thinkery’s behavior to your own taste.

As we’ve learned over time people tend to use thinkery all in a slightly different way. While some users want to add things by simply pressing enter, others want to explicitly hit the “Add”-Button. Also, others want hashtags only for quickly inserting their thoughts (Ex.: #buy milk #tomorrow) but not display them in the list, i.e. remove them automatically once their thing is saved.

With Settings you can now easily set your preferences once and thinkery will behave exactly the way you want in the future. Currently you can set these options:

Automatically put cursor focus to search/add box
Open urls in a new window
Don’t save new things when pressing Enter in the text box
Always remove hashtags from the thing title

We’re gonna keep the same default values for now but if we learn that a lot of people customize thinkery in a specific way we may adapt these.

Please do let us know if you have any other practical setting in mind we should include. Thanks for all the feedback you have given us so far!

Improved Search: Now Faster And With More Relevant Results

While thinkery’s database and the number of users has grown over the last couple of months the search experience wasn’t as great as we envisioned it to be. Due to the sheer size of the database it got slower and slower, so it was not unusual to wait up to 3 seconds or more to get results. Also, the old search lacked a couple of helpful features that are pretty much standard nowadays. No more!

We dramatically improved thinkery’s search! We now run new search technology under the hood and are sure that you will like it :)

The new search at a glance:

Extremely fast results as soon as you start typing
Improved intelligence and relevance based on title, content and tags
Combine multiple search words, for ex. “#buy #music” or “#thinkery #android”
Search operators like “example -word” (everything containing example but not word), “silver OR trade” (everything with silver or trade)

Responsiveness = Goodness

While our mobile apps are being actively developed we took the chance to improve a couple of things which you will immediately notice:

thinkery is now responsive, i.e. the web app resizes properly to the device you’re using. this works from desktop down to tablet and mobile.
the mobile web app now provides a better user experience, for example the header is sticky and allows you to search / add a thing no matter where you are
the single view is tuned so that you will have more joy reading
we moved the public/private sharing options inside the thing display to make it even more accessible and remove longer mouse movements
better print layout and modernized general look

thinkery Android App Beta

A lot of our users had requested an Android App for using thinkery on the go, and, in our increasingly mobile world this is as natural as having your morning ~~coffee~~ orange juice.

It has been a long time coming and we are happy to announce that we are in the final stages of releasing our app.

It is already very usable and has the most important features like:

Quickly add, edit, delete things
Super-fast search (even better than the desktop browser version :)
Have your things available offline, with sync happening in the background via push
and much more!

But before we can release it, we need your help to catch any remaining bugs and therefor ask you to join us in testing the app.
